Mental Health First Aid – Adult – 2 day

This comprehensive and interactive course gives participants the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise when someone may be experiencing poor mental health and provide supportive, early intervention. Led by accredited instructors, the training combines expert guidance, group discussion and practical activities to help learners feel confident having supportive conversations and guiding people towards appropriate help.

Across four flexible sessions, participants will build their understanding of mental health, reduce stigma and develop the practical skills needed to support others while also looking after their own wellbeing.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise the signs that someone may be experiencing poor mental health

  • Provide initial support and respond with confidence using a Mental Health First Aid action plan

  • Practise active listening and empathy to have supportive, non-judgemental conversations

  • Encourage individuals to access professional help and other support networks

  • Improve mental health literacy and challenge stigma through more informed language and understanding

  • Understand the MHFAider role, including boundaries and confidentiality

  • Practise self-care and protect your own wellbeing while supporting others

  • Access the MHFAider Support App®, dedicated text support from Shout, and ongoing learning opportunities

Course format:

  • Delivered either online or face-to-face

  • Structured across four live sessions (up to 3 hours 45 minutes each), usually delivered within a two-week period

  • 14 hours of learning led by an MHFA England Instructor Member

  • Small groups of up to 16 participants to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment

  • A mix of instructor-led teaching, group discussions and interactive activities

Suicide First Aid Through Understanding Suicide Intervention

This powerful one-day course provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognise when someone may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and intervene in a safe, supportive and effective way. Designed for people across a wide range of professions and community roles, the training empowers participants to have life-saving conversations, respond with confidence and connect individuals to the help and support they need.

Through a combination of expert instruction, real-life case studies and practical exercises, learners develop a deeper understanding of suicide and the factors that can contribute to suicidal thoughts, while gaining the tools to offer immediate, compassionate support.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the complex factors that can contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Recognise verbal, behavioural and situational signs that someone may be thinking about suicide

  • Use effective communication techniques to start supportive conversations and reduce risk

  • Apply practical suicide intervention strategies to support someone in crisis

  • Help guide individuals towards appropriate professional support and resources

  • Understand ethical considerations including confidentiality, consent and personal boundaries

  • Recognise the importance of self-care when supporting others in difficult situations

  • Suitable for professionals and community members alike – no prior mental health training required

Certification:

  • Accredited by City & Guilds of London with 6 credits at Level 4 upon completion

  • Opportunity to complete a written assignment to gain the RSPH Level 4 Award in Suicide First Aid®

Suicide First Aid Lite

This accessible half-day course provides a practical introduction to suicide prevention, equipping participants with the essential knowledge and skills to recognise when someone may be experiencing thoughts of suicide and respond in a supportive way. Ideal for those who want a shorter alternative to the full-day programme, Suicide First Aid Lite gives learners the confidence to start important conversations and guide individuals towards appropriate support.

Designed for people across a wide range of professions and community roles, the course combines expert guidance with interactive activities to build understanding, reduce stigma and empower participants to take action when it matters most.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the complex factors that can contribute to suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Recognise verbal, behavioural and situational signs that someone may be thinking about suicide

  • Use supportive communication techniques to start sensitive conversations

  • Apply simple intervention strategies to support someone who may be in distress

  • Help connect individuals with appropriate professional help and support services

  • Understand important ethical considerations including confidentiality, consent and self-care

Course format:

  • Half-day training (3 hours) split into two 90-minute sessions

  • Designed to be a concise and focused introduction to suicide intervention

  • Includes interactive presentations, case studies and practical exercises to build real-world confidence

Certification:

  • Participants receive a certificate of attendance

  • Awarded a digital badge from NCSPET recognising knowledge of suicide prevention as a Suicide First Aider®

Understanding Self-Harm and Self-Injury

This insightful one-day workshop is designed to build awareness, challenge stigma and develop a deeper understanding of self-harm and self-injury. Through a supportive and open learning environment, participants will explore the reasons behind these behaviours and gain the knowledge and confidence needed to respond in a compassionate and informed way.

Ideal for both professionals and individuals who support others, this CPD-accredited course provides practical guidance on how to recognise and respond to self-harm while understanding the wider social, emotional and cultural factors that may influence it.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of self-harm and self-injury and why people may engage in these behaviours

  • Recognise the challenges and experiences faced by individuals who self-harm

  • Understand how stigma, discrimination and societal pressures can impact self-harm behaviours

  • Explore how diversity, identity and personal circumstances can influence experiences of self-harm

  • Gain confidence in responding to and supporting someone who may be self-harming
